The quickest way to completely blow your chances of making a buck from marketing via is to try too hard.

Twitter was made for people to network. It wasn’t created with marketing in mind. To make matter worse, there’s a strong anti-marketing sentiment dripping from the Twitter walls.

A recent ProBlogger posts asked Twitter users for their advice to new participants. The first entry on the list was, “Be honest. Have fun. Don’t try to sell anything”. That’s the prevailing attitude, like it or not.

That doesn’t mean you can’t market via Twitter. It just means that you’re going to need to do it with a little more than is usually called for when using other techniques.

If you hit Twitter with the intention of selling a product and you go after that goal as hard as you can, you’ll lose and you’ll close some doors.

In other marketing milieus, we talk about how it’s important to take business-related action quickly and repeatedly. That’s in most cases, but when it comes to Twitter, having a slower hand and some patience is the best way to become successful.
