The automatic direct message was one of the earlier twitter add-ons. It’s turned into one of the most hated. Today, only those who are really “out of the loop” are still sending automated direct messages to people.
The most common application for the messages was to say “thank your for following me”. That seems pretty innocent, right? Well, it was. And then it became a way for people to say “thank you for following me and check out this link while you’re at it”. Suddenly, the DM had crossed the border into spam country.
Meanwhile, active Twitter users started to get doubly annoyed by their prevalence. Not only were many of them pleas for a link-click, they were starting to really clog up the DM mailbox.
Today, they’re considered hopelessly out of style. If you’ve been thinking about making an auto-DM part of your Twitter game plan, think again.
Do a little homework first, you’ll soon discover that their more hated than just about anything else in the entire world of social networking.
